Move or Improve

Should we move or improve, that is the question. Not
exactly a Shakespearian quote but close.

This decision has vexed families for as long as there
has been houses. People tend to walk around wringing
their hands & holding their heads in despair searching
for the right answer. Here it is:

If you are happy with your basic house, content with
the neighborhood, neighbors, schools, shopping
church, (husband?/wife?) etc  then remodel. If you are
not, then move.

Oh no you say, "it isn't as simple as that". I really like it
here but this neighborhood is not good enough to
spend many thousands of dollars on this house. We
will price ourselves out of the market. Anyway, the
interest rates are too high & I  think I can buy a house
with more room somewhere else for only a little more
than I can get for this place. It's true, the kids will be
disrupted with school & friends but they will have to
adjust. My wife/husband is happy here, lots of friends
he/she will miss but I can't justify the expense of a
remodel."

This argument is all about money. Do we really want to
live our lives based on money decisions? We aren't
talking about affordability, we are talking about
economics. It becomes a question of what is the best
economical way to do something. This person can
afford to go either way, remodel or move, but he/she
are ignoring family & friends & their importance in their
family lives. That has value also. A lot of value.

I have always thought that the "pricing yourself out of
the market" argument never made any sense. I have
never seen any evidence that was true.
In all the years I have been associated with home
remodeling I have never seen anyone lose a dime on a
home addition. Never!

I rest my case.
