 Getting bids for your room addition

At some point you are going to want to call in some contractors, (but not till you learn when to call them) find out what all this is going to cost. Here is what I observed too many times when invited to over 5000 houses to bid a job:

Homeowner: "I'm going to build an extra bedroom on the back of my house. I've called in three (4,5,6...) contractors. Cheapest one gets the job"

That's OK with me, that's competition & I'm all for it.

But then I say "OK, where is it going to go & how big is it going to be"

Homeowner: "I haven't decided yet"

I can guarantee you that this individual is going to pay too much for what he receives. If he is lucky it will only cost him a few thousand more than what he should have paid.

Contractor's lick there chops with homeowners like this. He's a chicken waiting to be plucked & he is going to get taken for a ride.

The lesson for today is - You must be prepared - Contractors are not stupid....well, most of them anyway.

They are way ahead of you in bidding & construction experience.

They know this homeowner because they have seen him many times before. The others had different names different faces but they all acted the same & used the same word phrases.

Contractors have seen his way of receiving bids & they know how to deal with them.

This person really doesn't know what he wants. He wants someone else to make his choices & even though he is going to spend a large amount of money he is too lazy to put just a little bit of time & effort into planning the addition correctly.

He is going to pay a large penalty for not doing so.
