Closet Tips
My customers always made sure we were going to include more
closet space in almost every addition. Mostly they were for
clothing but we built every kind of closet you could imagine to
house every conceivable item you can think of.
I always thought the most efficient clothes closet was 6'-8' long
(or longer if you have the room) by 2' deep with bi-fold doors.
You can have one top shelf & two rods for long & short clothes
& then add some shelves. on one or two ends, floor to ceiling.
Now that's storage.
A simple efficient walk-in closet should be 6' wide by as much
depth as you can muster. 2' on each side is used for the
hanging clothes & 2' in the middle for you to walk. You will have
more room to maneuver shelving & clothes poles & if the back
of the closet is on an outside wall then a small window will allow
an airing of the closet every once in a while.
I once built a 14'X16' addition off the master bedroom for use
as a clothes closet. Shelving, hanging rods galore along with
cedar storage cabinets. It was the largest clothes closet we
ever built.
